Best Mountain Bike for Big Guys

Mountain bikes can take a real beating and need to be built to withstand some heavy use. Not only do they need to be rugged but the weld points need to be strong. This is even more so if its rider is big, tall, muscular and heavy. Let’s face it, not every biker is 5’6’ and weighs less than 225 pounds. “One size fits all” just doesn’t work here. Cycles come with weight limits and if you are over the prescribed limit, it can void the warranty.

The good news is that quite a few mountain bike manufactures have taken that into consideration and have created bikes built for larger cyclists (called Clydesdales). We have done the research for you and found some companies that have produced some excellent quality bikes. We will also break the components down so you know what to look for when buying the best mountain bike for big guys.

Mountain Bike Components Built for Big, Tall or Heavy Riders

Before we steer you in the direction of some quality manufactures, let’s analyze what to look for in a heavy duty mountain bike.

Frame

Lighter is not always better. The frame needs to be relative to the rider’s weight. For a rider that is over 275 pounds, they would want a frame weighing at least 18 to 20 pounds. Look for frames with a bigger diameter and thicker tube walls. Aircraft quality steel and titanium are good choices for strong frames.

Wheels

While the frame is a major consideration, the wheels of a mountain bike are just as important. Opt for high thread-count tires, strong inner tubes and double-butted stainless steel spokes. Stan’s No Tubes offers some good options for riders less than 250 pounds such as the Flow EX and MK3 for all-mountain use rated to 250 pounds. Enve recommends the SES 3.4 and 7.8 wheels which are constructed to be stiff enough for a heavier rider.

Saddle

Do not be afraid to change out the saddle on your heavy-duty mountain bike if it is not comfortable. Though bigger riders prefer wider saddles for a leisurely ride, many mountain bikers still opt for a stiffer narrower option. It is interesting to note that the sit bone width does not change based on weight or even build.

Handles

A lot of upper body pressure goes onto the handles. Make sure that the handlebars are OEM. Carbon bars do have weight restrictions, so weigh this option carefully.
