The History of Newt and Harold’s

Newt and Harold’s started out next to their big brother store Sports Exchange.  Lori Ambur and Lori Wright started Sports Exchange selling and consigning used and eventually new sporting goods in June of 1985.  During this time they sold everything from Kayaks to skis. Lori and Lori began snowboarding in 1990 after a few customers began requesting Kemper, Gnu, Crazy Banana, Mistral, Burton and Avalanche snowboards.  There were no women’s boards, boots or bindings.  Needless to say the school of hard knocks was the learning curve that Lori and Lori were in on during the early riding years.

Sports Exchange was located a block from one of the best bike specific shops in the Northwest, George’s Bikes.  It didn’t take long to figure out snowboarding was what Lori and Lori enjoyed and wanted to specialize in.  So they emulated the business model of some of the local specialty retailers like Benchmark, McUs, Greenwoods and Georges Cycles.

Robert Balderson approached the girls after Spikes a skate shop on 8th street closed.  Lori and Lori hired Robert to facilitate in buying and getting the skate department rolling.  Soon after they opened Newt and Harold’s, a snowboard, skate specific shop.  The new shop opened its doors in an old transmission repair shop run by two long time mechanics named Newt and Harold, hence the name. Newts attempts to honor Newt and Harold by carrying on the tradition of superior service and quality products.

The skate and snowboard industry grew and so did Newt and Harold’s.  The little store went from 1200 square feet to 6000 to even bigger.  Newt and Harold’s has always been a sum of all parts.  Lori and Lori feel they have been incredibly fortunate that so many amazing people have landed at the shop for sometimes an extended stay.  There are so many former employees to list after 26 years we won’t start, but you know who you are.  Newt’s growth and success is “our” success.

Current Crew at Newt’s:  Ben Woodard, MaryAnn Compton, Evan Cecil, Matt Rigby, Spencer Lay, Charlie Allen, Jenny Englesby, Tyler Lambert, LW, LA and the long suffering yet amazing Anna Rydman.   Together they have 90 years of serving the snow and skateboard community.

Thanks to all Newt’s friends and supporters through the years!
